Frequently asked questions

How are characters and words counted?

Each visible character counts as 1, including an accented letter or an emoji. A word is a run of letters or digits: "don't" and "well-known" count as one word.

Why does "Mr. Smith" count as two sentences?

A period ends a sentence, even after an abbreviation. This is a known limit of automatic counting. Likewise, a run of Chinese or Japanese characters without spaces counts as one word.

Is my text sent or stored?

No. In the interface, counting happens in your browser. Through the API, the text is processed and immediately discarded: it is neither stored nor logged.
